After leaving their original hive they find somewhere handy to hang in a cluster while scout bees decide on the location their new home. Most swarms occur on warm bright days anytime from April to September although May, June and July are the more common, swarms tend to occur between 11am – 4pm. A swarmed colony can be found outside at anytime of day if a suitable new hive has not been found. If you do come across some bee in the early morning or late evening, this could mean the cluster has been out all night/day and be cold and tired. Quite often there's a peak to swarms on a warm sunny day following a period poor weather, and usually when temperatures are approaching the higher teens.
A full honey bee swarm can be really dramatic involving many 1000's of bees in a huge noisy cloud, However, they generally settle into a cluster within a few minutes.
